The following key points may assist you in making your choice

1. Chamber shape and size.
Your choice will depend on the type of load which you wish to process. Rectangular chambers can be more convenient and will hold larger loads, but cylindrical chambers can have a lower purchase price.

2. Steam source.
An external steam source from the autoclave's own generator or from site services has the advantage that the chamber is unencumbered by water and heating elements, with air removal being effected by upward or downward displacement through an appropriate outlet. An in-chamber steam source uses heating elements immersed in water at the bottom of the chamber, with air removal by upward displacement. The initial cost of an in-chamber steam system is less than for external system, but steam generation is slower, maintenance and cleaning costs can be higher, and the load capacity may be less.

3. Front or top loading.
Most models are front loading with horizontal chambers, but some of the Touchclave-R models are top loading with vertical chambers.

4. Multi-program or Uni-program Touchscreen control system.
The multi-program system can store up to 8 different cycle programs, catering for most load types. A load and drain probe are supplied as standard with the system. The alternative uni-program system stores one program at a time, and is suited to simple repetitive sterilizing applications.

5. Vacuum.
Improves the sterilization efficiency by improving air removal at the start of a cycle for certain types of load. It also speeds up the cooling and drying stages of the cycle for all types of load.

Safety and convenience features

The chambers are pressure vessels, built to comply with the European Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC and with other international standards. All pressure vessels are independently certified and have a 10-year integrity warranty.

On all LTE autoclaves, sensors ensure that steam cannot enter the chamber until the door is secure, and that an exhaust valve is released. If an attempt is made to open the door while the chamber is pressurised. An interlock system prevents the door being released until the pressure is at atmospheric level and the temperature has fallen to the programmed safe-offloading level.

Models up to 40 litres in size may be benchtop-mounted. Larger sizes are floor-standing. Castors are fitted to aid movement, and most models will pass through a standard single door.
